Everything you need to know about perfume mists
Perfume mists have had somewhat of a renaissance in the fragrance world of late – with many of our favourite eau de parfums being transformed into lighter, fresher mist formats designed for topping up throughout the day (and at a lower price, too).
At Floral Street, we’ve seen the appetite for perfume mists is continuing to grow – especially when, in our mists’ case, they’re combined with skin-loving benefits and endless layering opportunities to create unique fragrance combinations.
Want to learn more about mists? You’re in the right place – in this guide, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about our most versatile perfume mists, from the science of concentration to the art of fragrance layering.
What is a perfume mist?
A perfume mist is the airier, fresher, more low-key cousin of traditional perfumes. Often referred to as a body mist or body spray, they’re defined by their lower concentration of perfume oil, making them perfect for a subtler scent, fragrance layering (more on that later), or topping up throughout the day.
While a traditional perfume is designed for impact on specific pulse points, a perfume mist is all about the experience of the moment, creating a subtle "halo" of scent that surrounds you.
The science of scent: understanding mist concentration
Every fragrance unfolds in layers, often described as top notes, heart notes, and base notes. The top notes are what you notice first, the heart notes shape the fragrance’s character, and the base notes are what linger on the skin.
Perfume mists and eau de parfums are built in the same way, but the difference lies in their concentration of perfume oil. This is what shapes how a fragrance feels, wears, and develops throughout the day.
The difference between perfume mists and eau de parfums
The main difference between a perfume mist and an eau de parfum is concentration. Eau de parfums usually contain around 15% to 20% perfume oil, which gives them a richer scent with more depth and staying power. Perfume mists typically contain around 3% to 5% perfume oil, creating a lighter, airier finish.
This difference also changes how they are worn. Eau de parfums are usually applied more sparingly to pulse points, while perfume mists can be spritzed generously across the body from head to toe.
The skin-loving ActiScents™ in Floral Street’s Perfume Mists
When designing our Perfume Mists, we knew they had to work harder than a regular, run-of-the-mill body spray. In every Floral Street Perfume Mist, we use innovative active ingredients, called ActiScents™ that combine fragrance with skincare – and reduce inflammation and redness with every application.
The science behind ActiScents™
The product of decades of experimental research by our fragrance partners at Robertet, ActiScents™ are active ingredients and raw materials that add both fragrant and cosmetic benefits in one olfactory experience.
Formulated with skin-soothing ActiScents™; Wonderland Peony’s sandalwood, Wild Vanilla Orchid’s vanilla blossom, Sweet Almond Blossom’s ylang ylang and Enchanted Masquerade’s cabreuva oil all provide skin-soothing comfort, reducing the inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase’s activity by 50%.
Each perfume mist also includes upcycled rose water (a by-product sourced from the production of rose essential oil) that has light moisturisation and antioxidant properties – simultaneously adding benefits while helping to reuse ingredients for the good of the planet.
How to use perfume mists effectively
To get the most out of your mist, it’s all about the technique. Unlike an eau de parfum, where you want to avoid rubbing your wrists to prevent "crushing" the molecules, a perfume mist is designed for a broad, misty application.
5 Application tips for maximum impact
1. Spray after showering
Apply your perfume mist straight after showering, when skin is clean and lightly hydrated. This helps the fragrance sit better on the skin.
2. Mist over moisturised Skin
Perfume mists often last longer on skin that has been moisturised first. An unscented body lotion or cream gives the scent something to cling to.
3. Use the mist cloud method
Spray a light cloud in front of you and walk through it for a more even, all over veil of fragrance. This keeps the effect soft rather than too concentrated in one area.
4. Focus on warm areas
Mist the neck, chest, and inner elbows to help the scent gently diffuse as your body warms up during the day.
5. Top Up little and often
Because perfume mists are lighter than eau de parfum, they are ideal for reapplying. Keep one in your bag for an easy refresh whenever you want to lift your scent.
The art of fragrance layering
Fragrance layering is a way to build a scent that feels more expressive and lasts longer on the skin. By pairing a lighter perfume mist with an eau de parfum, you can create a fragrance that feels uniquely yours that stays with you all day.
This "scent sandwiching" layering technique helps the fragrance last longer and gives it more dimension, with the mist adding freshness and the eau de parfum bringing richness and depth.
“As a brand, we’re passionate about scent exploration, and empowering our customers to become connoisseurs of fine fragrance,” says Floral Street founder, Michelle Feeney. “Our perfume mists allow everyone to play and layer up our scents. They’re also the perfect introduction to fine fragrance for younger customers who are just discovering the mood-boosting power of perfume.”
